Dry Camping
One of the most popular options for parking your RV for free is called dry camping. With dry camping, you will find a parking lot of a business such as Walmart or Flying J where you can rest for the evening. You will not have access to any camping amenities, but you won’t have to spend any money to sleep there. You could even look at camping in a Cracker Barrel parking lot and enjoy a hot breakfast inside in the morning.
Boondocking
Another way you can camp somewhere for free in Texas is by boondocking, otherwise known as wilderness camping. This often occurs in public land areas like state or national parks such as Big Bend National Park or Devil’s River State Natural Area. You will not have access to water or hookups, but in one of our RVs, you can enjoy holding tanks full of water and much more to keep you comfortable even while “roughing it.”
Park Passport
There will be some free RV camping options that are only open to certain people who are eligible for something called a Park Passport. These are provided by Texas Parks and Wildlife to certain groups of people to allow them to use the campground facilities without paying the entrance fee. People who can get a Park Passport are:
- People who turned 65 before September 1, 1995
- U.S. Armed Services members who have been assessed by the VA to be 60% or more disabled
